The venture capital industry brings together two prominent areas at Wharton — finance and entrepreneurship. Professor Metrick will lead this discussion among prominent venture capitalists, focusing on current industry issues and trends. There will be viewpoints from both the east and west coast VCs, with much of the discussion focusing on emerging technologies.

Dr. Douglass Given is a partner at Bay City Capital and has been with the firm since October 2000. He was formerly CEO and a director of NeoRx, and corporate senior vice president and CTO of Mallinckrodt. Prior to Mallinckrodt, Dr. Given served as CEO and a director of Progenitor and Mercator Genetics. Dr. Given has held positions as vice president at Schering Plough Research Institute, vice president at Monsanto/G.D. Searle Research Laboratories, and medical advisor at Lilly Research Laboratories.

Dr. Given is the chairman of VIA Pharmaceuticals, chairman of Vivaldi Biosciences, and a member of the board of directors of SemBioSys Genetics and Aksys, Ltd. He is also a member of the Visiting Committee to the Division of Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Advisory Board.

He holds an MD with honors and a PhD from the University of Chicago, and an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He was a fellow in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

:: Peter Kash

   Two River Group Holdings

Peter Morgan Kash is co-founder and chairman of Two River Group Holdings, LLC, a biotechnology venture capital company that creates companies that commercially develop biotechnology compounds. Mr. Kash is also the president of Riverbank Capital Securities, Inc., a NASD broker-dealer. Mr. Kash has co-raised nearly $600 million in private equity financings throughout his career.

Mr. Kash has served on the board of directors of several privately held and publicly traded biotechnology companies. Mr. Kash co-founded Neose Technologies, the first venture company to go public from the University of Pennsylvania. He also co-founded and served as vice-chairman of Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc.; Javelin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; and Velcera Pharmaceuticals; and serves as a director of Nile Therapeutics, Inc. and Danube Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Mr. Kash has worked on Wall Street for 25 years, 19 of them as a venture capitalist specializing in Biotechnology. From 1990-1992, he served as an associate professor of mMarketing at Polytechnic University. Mr. Kash served as an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship and venture capital at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania from 1996-2000. He served as a visiting professor of entrepreneurship at the Graduate School of Business at Nihon University in Tokyo.

Mr. Kash earned his BS in Management Science from SUNY Binghamton and his MBA in Banking and International Finance from Pace University. He is currently completing his doctorate of education. He serves on the Board of Keren-Or, a charity for blind and multi-handicapped children.

On November 16, 2001, Mr. Kash published his first book, Make Your Own Luck, which is now available in eight languages worldwide.

:: Edward J. Mathias , C'64

   The Carlyle Group

Edward Mathias is a managing director of The Carlyle Group, a global private equity firm headquartered in Washington, DC. He was instrumental in the founding of The Carlyle Group and assisted in raising the firm's initial capital. Prior to joining Carlyle in January 1994, Mr. Mathias was a member of the management committee and board of directors of T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., a major investment management organization. Mr. Mathias presently serves as a member of the investment committees for a number of Carlyle's global funds.

Mr. Mathias is also active with numerous other private equity limited partnerships and is a frequent investor in early stage, private companies.

Mr. Mathias holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he currently serves on the board of trustees. He is also a member of the Penn Investment Board that oversees the University's endowment. Mr. Mathias served in the U.S. Navy as a Supply Corps Officer aboard a destroyer and subsequently as a military social aide to President Lyndon B. Johnson. He is a member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Investment Advisory Committee, the Board of Dean's Advisors of the Harvard Business School, the Council on Foreign Relations, and co-chairs the president's circle at the National Gallery of Art, where he is also a member of the trustees' council. He sits on the board of directors of NexCen Brands, Inc. and Endeavor Acquisition Corp.
